From Computation to Cognition: The Evolution of AI in Mathematics
When: October 8, 2026 · 09:25
For decades, mathematicians have leveraged computers as powerful calculators to push the boundaries of the field. This partnership has deep historical roots, from the EDSAC-2 computations that birthed the million-dollar Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, to the brute-force computational triumph of the 1976 four-color theorem. As technology evolved, so did the nature of this collaboration. In 2007, AI took a prominent step forward when researchers weakly solved the game of checkers, proving a draw under perfect play. Now, we are standing at the edge of a new paradigm. Rather than merely crunching numbers, modern artificial intelligence is becoming an active partner in mathematical discovery. Recent months have seen an unprecedented surge in AI-assisted breakthroughs, from discovering new bounds in combinatorics to advancing the formal verification of complex theorems. This talk will explore the rapid, cutting-edge advancements of AI in mathematics and examine what this shifting landscape means for the future of human discovery.
