Policy, Society & Future Systems — Governance, sustainability, safety, education, and public engagement.

Sub-session description

Academic Scope

This sub-session focuses on occupational safety, health, and risk management as fundamental components of responsible and sustainable mineral resource development. As mining and resource industries adopt increasingly advanced technologies and operate in more complex environments, ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of workers remains a critical priority for industry, regulators, and society.

The sub-session aims to provide a platform for discussing emerging challenges, innovative solutions, and best practices across the mining value chain in workplace safety, occupational health, and operational risk management. It encourages interdisciplinary perspectives that integrate engineering, management, environmental science, human factors, and regulatory approaches.

Contributions are invited on occupational health risks, workplace exposure assessment, accident prevention strategies, emergency preparedness, and safety culture development. The sub-session also welcomes studies on risk assessment methodologies, safety management systems, digital monitoring technologies, automation, and applications of artificial intelligence that contribute to safer and more resilient operations.

Particular attention is given to the role of governance, organizational learning, and human-centered approaches in improving safety performance and reducing operational risks. Case studies from mining operations, processing facilities, exploration activities, and infrastructure systems are highly encouraged.

By bringing together researchers, industry professionals, regulators, and safety practitioners, this sub-session seeks to advance knowledge exchange and support the development of safer, healthier, and more sustainable resource industries.
