Mineralogy and Petrography, Metamorphism, and Water-Rock Interaction

Geo Systems & Mineral Science — Fundamental geoscience, regional geology, mineral science, economic geology, and geophysics.

Sub-session description

Academic Scope

This sub-session focuses on the composition, evolution, and transformation of Earth materials, as well as the geological processes that govern the formation of minerals and rocks. It provides a platform for advancing research in mineralogy, petrology, metamorphic geology, geochemistry, and water–rock interaction processes, which are fundamental to understanding crustal evolution, mineral resource formation, and Earth system dynamics.
The sub-session welcomes contributions investigating the origin, composition, and evolution of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, as well as studies of mineral assemblages, crystallization processes, and physicochemical conditions of mineral formation. Research on metamorphic processes, fluid–rock interactions, hydrothermal systems, and mineral reactions under varying pressure–temperature conditions is particularly encouraged.
Contributions employing modern analytical techniques, including mineral chemistry, isotope geochemistry, geochronology, microanalytical methods, and advanced imaging technologies, are highly welcome. Studies utilizing electron microscopy, SEM-EDS, EPMA, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-MS, and other analytical approaches to investigate Earth materials are especially relevant.
The sub-session also encourages interdisciplinary studies that link mineralogical and geochemical processes to ore formation, environmental geochemistry, and crustal evolution. By integrating mineralogical, petrological, and geochemical perspectives, this sub-session aims to improve understanding of Earth materials and the processes that govern geological evolution and mineral resource development.

Mineralogy and crystallography Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic petrology Metamorphic processes and facies analysis Water–rock interaction and hydrothermal systems Geochemistry and isotope geoscience Mineral chemistry and geothermobarometry Geochronology and geological evolution Environmental and applied geochemistry Analytical mineral sciences and microanalysis Advanced characterization of Earth materials
