Resource and Economic Geology

Geo Systems & Mineral Science — Fundamental geoscience, regional geology, mineral science, economic geology, and geophysics.

Sub-session description

Academic Scope

This sub-session focuses on the geological processes that control the formation, distribution, and preservation of mineral resources within the Earth's crust. It provides a platform to advance scientific understanding of mineral systems, ore-forming processes, metallogeny, and economic geology, with particular emphasis on the geological factors that govern mineral resource potential and exploration.
The sub-session welcomes contributions investigating the origin and evolution of mineral deposits, including magmatic, hydrothermal, sedimentary, metamorphic, and supergene mineralization systems. Studies addressing mineral system architecture, fluid evolution, structural controls on mineralization, and the temporal and spatial distribution of ore deposits are particularly encouraged.
Research integrating geological, geochemical, geophysical, mineralogical, and geochronological datasets to understand ore genesis and improve mineral exploration models is highly welcome. Contributions related to critical minerals, strategic raw materials, rare earth elements, and emerging resource systems are also encouraged, reflecting the growing importance of sustainable resource supply in the global economy.
The sub-session further promotes the application of modern exploration concepts, mineral prospectivity analysis, and integrated resource assessment approaches. By combining fundamental geological research with practical exploration applications, this sub-session aims to strengthen understanding of mineral systems and support the discovery and sustainable development of future mineral resources.

Economic geology and metallogeny Mineral systems and ore deposit models Ore genesis and mineralization processes Hydrothermal, magmatic, sedimentary, and metamorphic ore systems Structural and tectonic controls on mineralization Geochemistry of ore-forming fluids Critical minerals and strategic raw materials Rare earth elements and emerging resource systems Mineral exploration and prospectivity analysis Integrated resource assessment and exploration targeting
